What it actually does
A humectant that draws and holds water at the skin's surface, commonly used in cosmetic formulations to support a plumper, more comfortable feel.
How to use it
Apply to damp skin, then immediately seal with moisturiser. On dry skin it can actually pull moisture out of your face.
The science, in plain English
A humectant able to hold many times its weight in water. Different molecular weights are formulated to hydrate at different depths of the skin's surface layers.
Myth vs reality
It does not plump wrinkles from below — it hydrates the surface layers, which can soften the temporary look of fine lines caused by dehydration.
Limitations of the evidence
Hydration effects are generally well supported and short-term; it does not "plump wrinkles from below."
Who may need extra caution
Applying to dry skin without sealing with a moisturiser may draw moisture out in low-humidity conditions.
