exfoliant
Salicylic Acid (BHA)
살리실산 · 水楊酸
Also known as: BHA, Salicylic Acid
What it actually does
An oil-soluble exfoliant commonly used in cosmetic formulations to help clear the sebum and dead-skin buildup inside pores, which is associated with the look of blackheads and congestion.
How to use it
Use PM only, 2–3 nights a week to start. Apply after cleansing, before hydrating layers. Sunscreen the next morning is non-negotiable.
The science, in plain English
An oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid studied for its ability to dissolve the sebum-and-dead-skin mix inside pores at typical cosmetic concentrations.
Myth vs reality
It is not only relevant for teenage skin — adult hormonal breakouts and congestion may also respond to it, though results vary.
Limitations of the evidence
Well-supported as a cosmetic exfoliant at typical over-the-counter concentrations; it does not guarantee clear pores and results vary by skin type and routine.
Who may need extra caution
May not suit very reactive skin; caution advised during pregnancy — check with a doctor.
