The formulas gaining attention on Korean beauty platforms often aren't the ones going viral on Australian TikTok. This fortnight: the quieter barrier-focused, hydration-led and everyday formulas appearing in Korean customer-review conversations — and why they rarely have the loudest marketing.

Why do the quieter formulas gaining attention in Korea rarely go viral here?
Products receiving attention from Korean customers do not always match those promoted most heavily to international audiences. Export-facing launches may receive more influencer promotion, attention-grabbing packaging and hero-ingredient messaging. Korean beauty platforms also surface quieter products through rankings and customer-review activity. These groups can overlap, but they are not always the same.

- What is it?
- A saturated, stable lipid — most commonly made from olives or sugarcane. It's the hydrogenated version of squalene, which your own sebum already contains. Because it's saturated it doesn't oxidise easily, so it doesn't go rancid on your face the way some plant oils do.

- It's the emollient of choice for people who want slip and comfort without a heavy occlusive film. In Korean formulas it usually appears at modest levels alongside humectants — the water goes in first, the squalane keeps it from leaving. It also sits comfortably under makeup.
- Should Australians care?
- Yes, especially if oils have historically broken you out. Squalane is generally considered a lightweight emollient, and many people find it comfortable in both warmer and cooler weather — though how any oil behaves on your skin is individual.
